I have always called Flanges - Flippies. So the name is a combination of both - Flippy Flanges.

A Flippy Flange is a folded piece of fabric nested into a seam. The result is a straight edge for a narrow insert of color. A flippy can be any width and can add a subtle highlight or a contrasting highlight.

I first learned about Flippy Flanges at a quilt retreat where quilters were using them in borders of a quilt. I loved the color and the effect of a perfectly straight narrow line.

I found I really like the accent of the Flippy and I started to use Flippy Flanges in my quilt designs to sometimes highlight a block or elements in a block, sometimes to create a shadow, sometimes to separate busy prints, and sometimes to use a bold pop of color.
